Freelance meeting next Monday: 19 October
At this month’s branch meeting, we’ll be throwing round ideas for motions to submit to the next Delegate Meeting, which will be in Southport, 15–17 April. If you have any topics you’d like to see debated by the NUJ at a national level, please bring along your ideas.
We also need to start thinking about who to send along as our delegates. Michelle Stanistreet, the general secretary, points out that “successive NUJ Delegate Meetings have agreed that more needs to be done to properly reflect the diversity of membership, to persuade more women members to take up seats on the National Executive Council, industrial councils and DM committees. Current figures show that some industrial councils and committees have less than 20% women’s membership, for example. Under-representation also applies to young people and black minority ethnic (BME) groups. We therefore ask branches to encourage members from under-represented groups to get involved.”
Among other things on Monday’s agenda is a first-hand report from the first London Freelance Salon and a discussion about student engagement with the branch.
